Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has been in the league for six years now and somehow is still the youngest head coach.
The Rams took a gamble hiring a then-30-year-old in McVay, but the results have been far past what anyone could’ve expected. In his time in Los Angeles, McVay has led the franchise to two Super Bowl appearances and a win in Super Bowl LVI.
One team who McVay has gotten the best of over the years is the Seattle Seahawks, who have been led by Pete Carroll. Carroll has managed to keep the Seahawks competitive every year despite some massive changes to the roster, but has run into trouble when going up against McVay and the Rams.
In a recent appearance on OnPoint Live, Carroll expressed his admiration and respect for McVay:
“I think he’s an incredibly effective coach. I noticed it right off the bat. His ability to structure a team and a style of offense and defense. Consistency that is remarkable. He has great insights, instincts for the games. He must be tough on his players enough to keep them coming back. Good vision. I’m sure for Sean it’s been hard because they’ve been so successful so early, it’s hard to figure out how to stay that way. It’s a big challenge. He hit it so fast and he’s also laid the groundwork for other guys to get opportunities. Those guys are doing well. He’s one of the best coaches that I’ve ever worked against. I love competing against him. I love that he’s a young guy, I’m an old guy, and we get to go head-to-head all the time.”
McVay holds an 8-5 edge over Carroll that includes a postseason victory, so he’s got the blueprint for what works against his division rival. However, Seattle was able to get the best of Los Angeles twice in the 2022 season though the rotten injury luck for the Rams certainly played a part in that.
The two head coaches are hoping for better luck in 2023 as the NFC looks wide open after the offseason. Both rosters have the personnel to make some noise, and it’ll be interesting to see which one comes out on top.
As always, the Rams and Seahawks will play each other twice in the 2023 season as division rivals. It won’t be long before they’re meeting up as the Seahawks will host the Rams in Week 1 before Seattle comes to L.A. in Week 11.
