Although the Los Angeles Rams were the highest-scoring offense in the 2017 NFL season, wide receiver Sammy Watkins never quite managed to garner any attention from quarterback Jared Goff. However, that has not discouraged him at all from wanting to remain in Los Angeles as he enters free agency.
Watkins got little work with the Rams’ offense after being acquired via trade late last summer. According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, he feels he can build much more chemistry with Goff after a full offseason:
“I just think he got on a roll with the guys that he had during OTAs, and once a guy is used to throwing it to someone else, he throws to his guys,” Watkins said. “It’s just part of the game where you need more time, or maybe another year.”
It was a down year for Watkins, to say the least. He registered just 593 yards on 39 receptions. Fortunately, Los Angeles managed to utilize him as a red zone threat with eight touchdowns.
Although he largely underwhelmed in his debut season with the Rams, there is still plenty of promise to take away from the year he had. Despite his frustration with the limited role on offense, Watkins has gone through a transformation of becoming a team-first player. As a result, there is speculation that Los Angeles could be looking to use their franchise tag on the wideout to see how he fits.
