The Los Angeles Rams wasted no time in taking advantage of the NFL’s loosened restrictions on jersey numbers heading into the 2021 NFL season.
The rule will allow running backs, defensive backs, wide receivers and tight ends to wear single-digit numbers. As a result, a number of notable players such as wide receiver Robert Woods, wide receiver DeSean Jackson, cornerback Darious Williams and safety Jordan Fuller have opted to switch numbers.
Woods had some serious competition for the No. 2 with cornerback Jalen Ramsey also looking to make the switch. However, it appears the former’s seniority with the team may have paid some dividends.
After all, Woods is an L.A. native that has roots firmly planted in the nearby community. He spoke on what it meant to be able to make the switch to the number he wore during his whole football career, via Twitter:

Woods’ attachment to the No. 2 is certainly understandable considering he is one of the few players that have had their career officially come full circle. It is also indicative of how many players felt once the opportunity came for them to do the same.
It remains to be seen was exactly gave Woods the advantage over a player of Ramsey’s caliber. Perhaps his seniority with the team and history with the number helped pay some dividends.
Of course, he is not the only one on the roster that will be making a change. Jackson had originally intended to wear No. 11 upon signing with the Rams as a free agent this offseason, however, he will now rock the No. 1 that he wore during his college days at Cal. His switch gave Williams an opportunity to wear No. 11, which he wore at UAB.
Woods will have a chance to make his dreams come to fruition in a season where Super Bowl expectations are as prevalent as ever.
