The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have signed offensive tackle Rob Havenstein to a three-year contract extension.

The Rams originally drafted Havenstein in the second round in 2015 out of Wisconsin. He and Aaron Donald represent the only players remaining on the roster from the team’s St. Louis days.

In 99 regular-season starts with the Rams, Havenstein ranks seventh in the NFL in sacks allowed, eighth in pressures allowed and 11th in hurries allowed.

The veteran was named a captain for the first time this offseason, hoping to take over as the leader of the offensive line after Andrew Whitworth retired.

That leadership will be much-needed for an otherwise young group as they look to protect Matthew Stafford this season.

As far as his extension goes, Havenstein was compensated properly to remain in L.A. for three more seasons, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network:

This extension will likely open up some extra cap space for the Rams, who recently also opened up some space by restructuring Tyler Higbee’s contract.

These moves should allow the Rams to re-sign Odell Beckham Jr. or have room to make another in-season trade, so Havenstein’s extension was a deal that benefits all parties.

Now that the negotiations are complete, Havenstein can shift his focus back to the field ahead of the start of the 2022 NFL season.
