Although the NFL preseason is a huge opportunity for players looking to make the final cut, the main goal first and foremost is to stay healthy. However, undrafted rookies Nelson Spruce and Brian Randolph both sustained injuries during the Los Angeles Rams 28-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.
Luckily for Spruce, the wideout was only diagnosed with a minor knee sprain and is not expected to miss a significant amount of time according to head coach Jeff Fisher during a press conference on Sunday:
“We’re still doing more tests,” Fisher said. “But from what I understand, surgery is not going to be necessary. So it’s just a matter of him healing and getting back on the field.”
Spruce, a Los Angeles area native, received high praise for his stellar performance leading the team with six receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. While Spruce is expected to miss some time, his performance will weigh on the back of the coaching staff’s minds when it comes down to final cuts.
Unfortunately for safety Brian Randolph, that opportunity has now gone out the window after suffering a torn ACL during kickoff in the fourth quarter. However, Fisher did express interest in giving the former Tennessee product another shot at the team next year:
“Its very unfortunate for him,” Fisher said. “We’ll tuck him away and give him an opportunity to compete next year.”
The Rams have since waived Randolph and brought in former Wisconsin safety, Micheal Caputo.
