One of the biggest reasons for the Los Angeles Rams hiring new head coach Sean McVay was to help quarterback Jared Goff develop into their future franchise player. Although it is still too early to project whether McVay has done the job, Goff already looks much more improved from last season.
However, Mike Martz, former head coach and offensive coordinator for the Rams is not buying into the young coach as the savior of this organization. Martz had some choice words regarding the hype surrounding McVay in an excerpt published by SBNation from the book “Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks”:
“What is he, a couple of months older than Jared? They hired a buddy for Jared. The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You’ve got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But buddy? And this guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke. Right, he’s going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all of his expertise and knowledge? Right. I’m not going to drink that Kool-Aid.”
Martz criticisms may seem a bit harsh considering how early it is in the year. However, it is fair to say that Martz may have underachieved by winning only one Super Bowl with the “Greatest Show On Turf”.
One would be hard-pressed to find more weapons on offense than they had from 1999-2002. As of now, only time will tell if McVay is the right man for the present-day Rams.
