The Los Angeles Rams kickstarted the offseason by making headlines with their acquisition of former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The move confirmed the team’s plans to keep their championship window open by potentially kicking things up a notch on offense. Defensive lineman Michael Brockers was among those that saw the move to switch out quarterback Jared Goff as a clear upgrade under center.
Unfortunately, Brockers’ comments have not aged very well after he was subsequently reunited with Goff following his trade to the Lions. As a result, he was forced to address the elephant in the room.
According to Austin Knoblauch of the L.A. Times, Brockers admitted that his dismissal of Goff and praise for Stafford were part of his attempts to generate some Super Bowl hype:
“I was really just trying to boost up the move that the team was doing and trying to make sure, boost up the fan base,” Brockers said. “I don’t think it was anything against Jared. I even had to go text Jared away from the camera, stuff like that, just man-to-man, just, man, bro, I did not mean it to go like that. I didn’t mean what I said.
“As a man, you just know that I respect you as a player. You took me to the Super Bowl so it wasn’t like that.”
Brockers and Goff went through their fair share of trials and tribulations in Los Angeles. Although there was certainly heartbreak at times, their overall tenure together was a successful one that featured plenty of wins.
However, both players are slated for a significant change-of-pace from what they were used to in Los Angeles. While their new chapter may have gotten off on the wrong foot, Detroit is hoping that the quality playoff experience between the pair can pay some dividends for a franchise that has been in rebuilding mode for quite some time now.
Regardless, Brockers was quick to jump on the Stafford train once the deal came to fruition and it is safe to say that the rest of the fan base feels the same following a disappointing outing from head coach Sean McVay’s offense in 2020. Even though the Rams may have experienced some significant turnover on defense, they are hoping to alleviate that by putting more points on the board.
Meanwhile, Brockers and Goff have a tall task ahead of them if they hope to turn things around with the Lions.
