Matthew Stafford was nothing short of spectacular in his debut season with the Los Angeles Rams as he led the franchise to its first Super Bowl title on the West Coast.

Prior to that, Stafford enjoyed a 12-year career with the Detroit Lions that began when he was taken with the No. 1 selection out of Georgia in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Stafford’s career accolades include a 2014 Pro Bowl selection, NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2011 and a spot on the Lions’ all-time team.

That list grew over the weekend as Stafford’s No. 7 was retired by his alma mater Highland Park High School in University Park, Texas.

Stafford played quarterback for the Highland Park Scots football team from 2003-06. He won the UIL 4A Division 1 State Championship as a junior in 2005 and earned a five-star recruiting grade.

Stafford of course attended Highland Park High School with Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, and the two remain good friends to this day.

With the festivities now behind him, Stafford will place all of his focus on helping the Rams get a win against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Stafford completed 29 of 41 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown while throwing three interceptions in a Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
