Matthew Stafford is entering his 17th NFL season and fifth with the Los Angeles Rams after the team restructured his contract to prevent him from potentially playing elsewhere.

Stafford is getting up there in age but has shown so signs of slowing down. The 37-year-old is coming off a solid season that saw him complete 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns in 16 games.

Stafford led the Rams to the playoffs for the second consecutive year and was only a few plays away from knocking off the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round.

With Stafford back as the Rams’ starting quarterback, he was ranked 59th on the NFL Top 100 list going into 2025:

Stafford is the second Rams player to be included in this year’s NFL Top 100 as running back Kyren Williams was previously ranked No. 85.

Stafford was ranked the 42nd best player heading into the 2024 season, so he actually dropped in the rankings this year. However, that’s less about his performance and more to do with the overall competition on the list.

Stafford can still play at a high level, and the Rams were thrilled to get him back this season as they look to return to the Super Bowl with an improved offense that includes wide receiver Davante Adams.

In a separate poll conducted by ESPN, NFL executives, coaches and scouts collectively voted Stafford as the No. 6 quarterback going into the 2025 season.

Matthew Stafford won’t practice at start of Rams training camp

As Matthew Stafford gets set for another season with the Rams, the organization is being cautious to ensure he stays healthy.

Stafford is dealing with some back soreness that has kept him out of training camp practices so far. Head coach Sean McVay expected him to return to action this week, but it appears that won’t be the case.

McVay revealed on Saturday that they will keep Stafford out of practice a little longer to ensure he is ready to go for Week 1. McVay added that Stafford’s status for the Rams regular season opener is not in jeopardy, they are just being cautious early in camp.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett have been taking reps with the first team offense for the time being, which is good in the event they are forced into game action this season.
