Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3. This marks the second time he has won the award in three weeks this season, also taking it home for his Week 1 debut against the Chicago Bears.
Stafford has been brilliant so far in his three games with the Rams, perhaps being the early favorite for the NFL’s MVP award.
Although he got off to a slow start against the Buccaneers, completing just one of his first seven passes, he settled in from there and was nearly perfect on the day. Stafford completed a total of 27 passes on 28 attempts for 343 yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers.
There was a span where the Rams scored touchdowns on four straight drives with all of them coming on drives led by Stafford of 75 yards or more. The biggest highlight was a 75-yard bomb to DeSean Jackson to begin the third quarter, finally connecting with his deep threat after they were unable to do so a couple of other times.
In three games, Stafford has completed a career-high 70.2% of his passes for 942 yards with nine touchdowns compared to only one interception. While the Rams offense already seems to be clicking on all cylinders, they have only played three games together so it’s reasonable to think they will get even better as the season goes on.
The Rams face another tough test in the undefeated Arizona Cardinals in Week 4 though, and Stafford and the offense will have to continue playing at a high level to keep up with Kyler Murray, who is also in the MVP conversation.
