The Los Angeles Rams have a singular team focus: win the Super Bowl. If this offseason has shown anything, it is that no player is happy with how last season ended.
One of the many players focused on the Super Bowl is cornerback Marcus Peters. Although not as explosive as he was during his years in Kansas City, Peters has proved to be one of the Rams key defensive players.
As the end of his contract is slowly approaching, Peters is not focused on that right now. According to Clarence Dennis of therams.com, Peters has his sights set on bigger things:
“I want to get to the Super Bowl and win it — it’s fine — that’s what I want to break, really,” Peters said calmly, referring to the record-breaking deal that Dolphins’ cornerback Xavier Howard signed earlier this month.
“The rest of the stuff will take care of itself.”
Howard was signed to a five-year, $76.5 million deal. Howard was drafted in 2016 and has played well through his early NFL career.
The Rams have been interested in bringing Peters back long-term. McVay has made it clear multiple times this offseason that he would like his starting cornerback to return next year. Although any word on what an extension or new contract might be, it seems that contract talks will put on the back burner until next offseason.
In the meantime, McVay has liked how Peters has looked this offseason. In particular, McVay applauded Peters performance in the latter half of the season.
McVay also noted that with as many skills as Peters has, this can be an exciting challenge for the defensive coaches:
“You see a guy with all the ability, I think our challenge as a coaching staff is to continue to suit our systems to our players’ skill sets,” McVay said. “And clearly this is a very productive player — great ball skills, great instincts and awareness — and I think when you really look at the makeup of not only our secondary, but our defense as a whole, that will enable us to continue to do some things that fit them and that’s the most important thing.”
The Rams defense will be led by returning players such as Peters, Aaron Donald, Aqib Talib and Cory Littleton. On top of that, Peters and McVay are looking forward to working with newcomers Clay Matthews and Eric Weddle.
With the defense seeming to improve and a stellar offense largely remaining the same, the Rams certainly have the tools to return to the Super Bowl.
