The Los Angeles Rams have been one of the best offenses in the league despite their lackluster showing in Week 5 of the 2017 NFL season. Meanwhile, the defense still has a few areas they need to improve on.
That said, the Rams made a surprising move following their loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Los Angeles announced their decision to waive starting strong safety Maurice Alexander and add wide receiver Michael Thomas.
The move certainly comes as a surprise with Alexander being one of the integral parts of the Rams defense throughout the 2016 NFL season. He was even rated by Pro Football Focus as one of the most improved defenders in the league.
However, it seems he had a tough time adjusting to Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme. He was a healthy scratch versus Seattle, a game in which backups John Johnson and Cody Davis played extremely well.
There was speculation that the Rams would make room for Thomas after serving a four-game suspension from PED’s. The second-year wideout turned heads throughout training camp with his speed and deep-play ability.
Thomas has recorded just three catches for 37 yards so far in his young career but spent a significant amount of time on special teams. With the influx of playmakers now on the Rams depth chart, it will be interesting to see where he falls in the pecking order.
