One of the first major moves that the Los Angeles Rams made this offseason was the acquisition of All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. This has significantly upgraded the secondary with one of the most talented players at his position in the league.
It didn’t take long after that for the Rams to pick up the roughly $9 million fifth-year option on his rookie deal for the 2019 season well ahead of the May 3 deadline. According to Myles Simmons of TheRams.com, general manager Les Snead voiced that he believes that Peters has a long-term future with the franchise:
“Todd speaks for himself right? What he’s done since he’s been here, especially — let’s call it — his rookie and this year,” Snead said. “So, that’s the reason we went into exercising his fifth-year option. And when we made the trade for Marcus, we do foresee a long-term future with him. So, we were definitely going to check that box as well.”
Since the move, the Rams have spoken quite highly of the fourth-year cornerback that has had an extremely accomplished career up to this point. In his first three campaigns with the Kansas City Chiefs, he earned a pair of Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro nod. He also became the first since Ed Reed with at least five interceptions in each of his first three seasons with a total of 19 over the stretch.
Peters has a prime opportunity in front of him to ingrain himself as a key piece to the puzzle defensively over the long haul that could see him form a dominant tandem in the secondary alongside Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib. The manner in which he plays this upcoming season could also determine what type of money the front office will be willing to commit to him on his next contract.
At this point in time, it’s clear that the Rams view him as being a huge part of their future over the next several years.
