With the remarkable 2017 NFL season officially in the books, the Los Angeles Rams have some big decisions to make this offseason. General manager Les Snead has already acknowledged that superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald will be the team’s top priority.
However, Los Angeles still has looming questions in the secondary. While there was speculation that a return to the Rams was highly unlikely prior to the year, Snead thinks there is a situation in which they would be able to sign veteran cornerback Trumaine Johnson to a long-term deal, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez:
The situation with CB Trumaine Johnson is fascinating. Snead said he can “definitely” see a scenario where he’s back, and so can I, especially with Kayvon Webster recovering from a torn Achilles and no real depth behind him.
The Rams had slapped a lucrative franchise tag on Johnson for the second straight year due to failed contract negotiations last offseason. However, the injury to cornerback Kayvon Webster has raised concern about the current state of their defensive backs.
That said, Los Angeles will likely need to offer a pretty penny in order to retain Johnson for the long-haul. Fortunately, he has been adamant about wanting to stay with the Rams throughout the entire process, which certainly raises optimism about both sides potentially striking a deal.
