The Los Angeles Rams have made several major moves this offseason to upgrade their roster to make another significant step forward for the 2018 campaign. It was a sequence of additions that included acquiring veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick.
WIth Cooks now on board for the 2018 campaign, this has raised questions concerning his long-term future as he’s currently in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. During an interview with Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio, general manager Les Snead revealed that both sides have begun contract negotiations voiced that the team with the hopes of keeping him with the team for the long haul:
“We’ve been in discussions with his agents and they’re well aware we want to get something done,” Snead said. “We do think he’s a perfect fit for us. We want to make sure that he’s around, and around for a long time. We also have some other contracts we need to deal with over the next month, two months.”
Since the Rams landed Cooks, the team has remained firm in making it known that they want to work out a new extension with the 25-year-old. There is the expectation that he will immediately fulfill a huge role in the offensive game plan as likely one of the primary weapons in the passing game.
At the same time, the Rams also are aware of the pressing need to work out a new deal with star defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who is also currently on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. Donald has remained in the picture as the top priority toward hammering out a new contract given his importance to the team as the anchor of their defense.
Ultimately, it may just be a matter of time before the Rams get their core pieces to the puzzle under new deals.
