Rams News: Les Snead Says Aaron Donald ‘On The Verge’ Of Becoming Highest-Paid Defensive Player

The Los Angeles Rams have undoubtedly been the busiest team in the league this offseason with the acquisition of four Pro Bowl-caliber players. Among the notable additions was that of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Suh once held the title of the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. General manager Les Snead feels that pedigree will coincide with a player like defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who he said is set to become the next highest-paid defensive player in football during an appearance on The MMQB Podcast with Peter King:

“The nice thing about Ndamukong, at age 31 and somebody who’s been the highest-paid defensive player in football, winning was very important in this phase of his career,” Snead. “He’s well aware that when you can partner, be beside someone who is on the verge of being the highest-paid defensive player in football, then that’s a really good thing. I guess you’d say two is better than one.”

The news comes to the delight of fans who have been anxiously awaiting an update on the status of their negotiations. While his comments provide a vague timetable, it is clear that Snead is expecting to make Donald the highest-paid defensive player in football, and for good reason.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has been deserving of such a contract even prior to last season. However, he finally put a stamp on that notion with a spectacular 2017 campaign.

Although it is encouraging to see Snead acknowledge his worth, it would be wise for fans not to hold their breath on them reaching a deal any time soon. A determining factor in this process will likely be dependant on what the Oakland Raiders pay defensive end Khalil Mack this offseason.
