By 1 PM PT on Saturday, all NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to the league maximum of 53 players. News had already begun to leak of Los Angeles Rams cuts as players like Ian Seau and Austin Hill were rumored to be released by the team.
The Rams have now made it official, announcing that they had cut down their roster to 53 players, including terminating the contract of linebacker Akeem Ayers:
The decision to release Ayers was undoubtedly the biggest surprise of all of the cuts the Rams made. Ayers was in the second year of a two-year deal he signed with the team last season and very few saw this move coming. Nonetheless, the Rams have decided to move on from the UCLA product.
Some of those released players will likely wind up on the Rams’ practice squad as the team can keep 10 players, assuming they clear waivers. Some have already speculated that someone like Ian Seau could wind up there.
Now that the moves have been made and the preseason is over, the Rams will turn their attention towards their opening game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, September 12. Case Keenum will be under center for that game as top overall pick Jared Goff will be the number 3 quarterback behind second-year man Sean Mannion.
Fans are hopeful that the Rams can turn some heads in their first year back in Los Angeles behind one of the best defensive lines in football as well as reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley.
