Rams News: Kyren Williams Suffers Broken Foot, Will Return For Training Camp

The Los Angeles Rams have had terrible luck when it comes to the health of their running back room.

The Rams lost Cam Akers for most of the 2021 season due to a torn Achilles he suffered in the offseason, while Darrell Henderson dealt with several injuries that forced him to miss five games. Fortunately, both Akers and Henderson were able to suit up during the postseason and each back had their moments in helping the organization capture Super Bowl LVI.

In order to build some depth, Los Angeles traded up in the 2022 NFL Draft to select Notre Dame running back Kyren Williams.

Williams will immediately come in and compete for third-down touches, but he too has suffered poor injury luck as head coach Sean McVay announced he broke his foot and underwent surgery, via Stu Jackson of TheRams.com:

Rams head coach Sean McVay on Tuesday said rookie running back Kyren Williams sustained a broken foot and already underwent surgery to repair the injury, which occurred last week. Williams is expected to return early in training camp.

“It’s an unfortunate setback, but he’s going to attack his rehab the right way and be back sooner than later,” McVay said after Tuesday’s minicamp practice.

While McVay added Williams should be able to come back early in training camp, it is an unfortunate blow for the rookie who will now have to miss out on more reps during mandatory minicamp. In the meantime, Los Angeles will get longer looks at Xavier Jones, Jake Funk and Raymond Calais, who all will be fighting for roster spots come the summer.

Because the Rams drafted him, it is safe to assume Williams will hold some type of role in the offense especially because of his ability as a pass protector. Hopefully he is back to full health sooner rather than later and can get back to getting acclimated with the team.
