The relationship between Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff and offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell got off to a positive start despite the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic this offseason.

Although Goff’s status as the clear-cut starter goes without question, there is still some speculation regarding which of the other unproven options in the quarterback room will serve as his backup.

The battle for the No. 2 spot will come down to quarterbacks John Wolford, Bryce Perkins and Josh Love. However, Wolford’s time in head coach Sean McVay’s system last year gives him a significant edge in training camp.

The preseason being cancelled means these quarterbacks will not have a chance to garner any real game experience heading into the 2020 NFL season. According to Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic, O’Connell is still optimistic about Wolford’s potential in the event Goff is unable to play:

“I think he’s going to be in a great situation in that huddle, being able to lead that group,” he said. “He’s prepared. He’s incredibly smart. I’ve been really happy with how he’s progressed fundamentally and he’s throwing the ball really well. … You know, I don’t worry too much with John about the experience, just because I’ve seen him work already and just as you get in the meeting rooming with him you know he’s prepared to be a professional quarterback and he operates every single day on that basis.”

Although O’Connell was not around to see Wolford’s progress since last year, it is safe to say that the former undrafted free agent has made some significant strides in his development. This has helped him establish himself as the favorite to earn the backup spot on the depth chart behind Goff in O’Connell’s eyes to start the season.

Wolford saw some preseason action with the New York Jets until he was cut leading up to the 2019 campaign. He was then drafted by the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF and managed to make a name for himself by earning AAF Offensive Player of the Week honors twice until the league suspended operations.

Wolford was quickly picked up by the Rams before being waived and brought back to the practice squad. It is safe to say that his time in the system has helped pay huge dividends for him this offseason given the praise form O’Connell.
