The Los Angeles Rams enjoyed plenty of success with quarterback Jared Goff at the helm under head coach Sean McVay. However, it became evident after last season that the front office was ready to shake things up under center and they wasted no time with the blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford.
It was considered to be a somewhat rapid change in course considering general manager Les Snead and chief operating officer Kevin Demoff pulled the trigger on a lucrative four-year extension for Goff worth $134 million. Not to mention, the $110 million in guaranteed money was an NFL record going into the 2019 campaign.
Despite getting back to the playoffs, Goff failed to provide the Rams with much bang for their buck in recent years and it led to them paying a heavy price in order to part ways. Regardless, it appears there is no sense of buyer’s remorse for the team.
Goff’s stint in L.A. may have come to an unceremonious end, but both sides can relish in the fact that it was an overall successful one. Demoff feels the decision to acquire Stafford was just too good to pass up on, via Kevin Modesti of the Daily News:
“It’s a new beginning at that position with a player who’s had a really decorated career to date,” Demoff said of the one-time Pro Bowler. “And we’re hopeful he’ll help put us over the top.”
Demoff added that there were not any regrets regarding how the situation with Goff played out:
“Every time a player doesn’t finish the deal that they signed, you probably wish they had,” the Rams’ COO said. “Regrets? No. Jared has been a great piece to our franchise.
“You can’t be caught up in decisions you’ve made in the past, because things change.”
There is no question that the Rams are still feeling the effects of having rewarded Goff with such a lucrative contract. Of course, it was a small price to pay in order to keep their championship hopes alive heading into the 2021 NFL season.
The Rams brass has made it clear that they have no issue with investing heavy resources in order to maximize on their current championship window. Demoff’s comments indicate that they are hoping Stafford will be the last piece of the puzzle.
A trip to this year’s Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium would undoubtedly make it all worthwhile. Fortunately, there is certainly good reason to be optimistic considering the veteran gunslinger will be joining his most talented supporting cast yet under a coach of McVay’s caliber.
