The Los Angeles Rams’ defense is going to look a little different in 2024 with the notable absence being Aaron Donald after the superstar recently announced his retirement from the NFL.
The team also lost some other key pieces in free agency though with safety Jordan Fuller signing with the Carolina Panthers. The Rams could have kept Fuller, who only signed a one-year contract, but instead decided to bring in former Washington Commanders safety Kamren Curl on a two-year contract.
Curl, who is one of the rising young stars in the NFL, discussed why the Rams stood out to him when he hit free agency for the first time.
“I would just say everything really,” Curl said. “We played them this past season and I liked everything about the team. I’ve been watching Coach McVay for a long time and everything he brings to the game and I’m just out here and I’m just really excited to get started.”
Curl also talked about the conversations he’s had with head coach Sean McVay about his role with the Rams considering he moved all around the field during his time in Washington.
“To play the safety position. Coach McVay was telling me he wants to tap into all my other skill sets as well, everything that I did in Washington plus some. I’m just ready to see what he’s got set up for me.”
McVay is known to be a player’s coach, which helps recruit players in free agency. That was the case with Curl as he said that McVay played a big role in him choosing the Rams.
“Just his energy and him reaching out to tell me basically he wanted me and that meant a lot,” Curl added. “Just off the bat that meant a lot. Like I said, just knowing about him since being in the league, this is a coach that I would love to play for.”
Curl would continue to elaborate about what stood out about McVay in their conversations.
“Really just his football mind. Just seeing stuff here and there, him talking about the game and explaining stuff. It’s just like he lives football. That’s what you want, a guy that’s all about football. And the energy he brings on the sideline and just the way the players who play for him play, you can tell we’re just ready to run through a brick wall for him so that’s the type of guy I want to play for.”
Jonah Jackson: it means a lot to join Rams
One of the other big offseason additions for the Rams came on the offensive side of the ball in the form of left guard Jonah Jackson. Similar to Curl, he expressed his excitement to join the great organization in L.A.
