The Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback room underwent a big shakeup this offseason with Jared Goff being traded to the Detroit Lions as a part of a blockbuster move to acquire Matthew Stafford.

Stafford’s backup will be the same that Goff had last season, however, with John Wolford handling those duties after showing he has a unique skillset that can be utilized at the end of last season.

Training camp has gotten off to an unfortunate start for Wolford though as he has been forced to miss a majority of the time after having his appendix removed.

Even though Wolford is recovering from the surgery well, Sean McVay revealed that the Rams’ backup will not play in the preseason, via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN:

According to Andrew Sicilliano of NFL Network, we will be seeing a lot of Delvin Hodges and Bryce Perkins in the preseason:

The Rams typically only carry two quarterbacks on their active roster, but this preseason will be a big opportunity for both Hodges and Perkins to earn the No. 3 spot.

Given Wolford’s uncertain status moving forward, it’s possible that he misses time during the regular season or the Rams decide to carry a third quarterback in case he isn’t 100%.

Even Stafford himself has been dealing with a thumb issue after undergoing surgery on it in the offseason and then slamming it on a teammate’s helmet in a recent practice.

Considering the Rams have Super Bowl aspirations, the quarterback position will be extremely important to that and that means also having quality backups in the event that Stafford goes down.
