Coming off a Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Rams were one of the first teams to make a splash in free agency this year when they signed former Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle to a two-year contract.
Weddle will be replacing Kamarcus Joyner in the Rams secondary after the former Ram signed a four-year contract with the Oakland Raiders.
The 34-year-old will get the chance to play next to John Johnson, who is one of the developing young stars on the Rams coming off of a breakout 2018 season.
Johnson attended Weddle’s introductory press conference at the Rams practice facility this past week to welcome his new teammate to Los Angeles and express his excitement to be able to play alongside him, via Clarence Dennis of TheRams.com:
“He’s just an all-around player, he can do it all,” Johnson said. “He blitzes, he can cover, he can play the middle post, so he can do it all — and that’s something that I like doing, I pride myself on, is doing it all. So it will be a good mix of everything.”
With Johnson and Weddle at safety and Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters on the outside, the Rams figure to have one of the best secondaries in football in 2019.
Getting to play alongside a guy that has been in the NFL for 12 years, being named a Pro Bowler six times and All-Pro twice in Weddle should do wonders for Johnson’s development as a young player in the league.
Weddle is known to be one of the better defensive leaders around, so it would be cool to see him take Johnson under his wing a bit this upcoming season.
