After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Los Angeles Rams were able to pull a come from behind win against the Dallas Cowboys in Jerry World this past Sunday. This was largely due to the defense allowing only six points in the second half compared to the 24 they allowed in the first half that had the team trailing by eight at intermission.
Following the victory, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips his “due” by making the proper adjustments in the final 30 minutes that boosted Los Angeles to get the win, according to Rich Hammond of the Southern California News Group.
“I want to give Wade Phillips his due. They came back in and made adjustments. We know they have good players. They drafted high, and they drafted well. Against a lesser crew, we could have come back better or we could have shut the door on them in the half there. This is a big win for the Los Angeles Rams. It’s a hurtful loss for us.”
Phillips was the Cowboys head coach from 2007 to the middle of the 2010 season and faced Dallas for the first time as the defensive coordinator of the Rams. Along with getting his credit that Jones felt was due to his former head coach, he also felt Phillips was the difference in the 35-30 loss to Los Angeles, according to Hammond.
“Wade Phillips was the difference out here today. He did an outstanding job. I just think we’re playing good defenses. Now is that enough? Of course not. We’re sick. We’re really sick that we lost the game.”
In his time with Dallas, Phillips went 34-22 and led them to the playoffs twice before being fired and replaced by current head coach Jason Garrett after the team’s 1-7 start in 2010. Now with the Rams, the 70-year-old has helped reshape the defense and along with the offense, is off to a tremendous start as they now head into Week 5 with a 3-1 record atop of the NFC West.
Los Angeles will now host the Seattle Seahawks at home on Sunday following consecutive victories that has the league believing that these are not the same 3-1 Rams from a season ago .
