When the Los Angeles Rams announced they had relieved Jeff Fisher of his head coaching duties following their embarrassing 42-14 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 14, everyone saw it coming except one person — Fisher.
Earlier that week, however, the Rams had strangely extended Fisher’s contract for two more years, but immediately realized it was in the organization’s best interest to part ways after clinching his fifth straight losing season in as many with the team.
Since being fired, the former Rams head coach has now started addressing his firing publicly and in an exclusive interview with Charissa Thompson of FOX Sports, he pulled no punches when asked why he was let go:
“He didn’t win enough games (Fisher said of himself), and the organization has a much bigger picture… And I don’t think I was ever part of seeing the new stadium.”
Following a surprising 3-1 start to the 2016-17 NFL season, Los Angeles had lost their last eight of nine games with Fisher as head coach and seemed to be going from bad to worse as the season progressed. The final blowout loss to the Falcons not only happened to be the biggest letdown of the year but for Fisher, it marked his 165th career loss, which tied an NFL record with Dan Reeves for an NFL head coach.
Although it is uncertain if any team will ever consider hiring him as their head coach, when asked what his ‘perfect scenario’ is following his firing with the Rams, Fisher could not help but want some revenge on his former team:
“I want a chance to play the Rams.”
In a league that recycles head coaches at an extraordinary rate, Fisher may get his opportunity one day which could potentially be in the new stadium in Inglewood that the Rams never pictured him being a part of.
