The Los Angeles Rams fired head coach Jeff Fisher last Monday, after the Rams clinched another losing season, the fifth in five seasons with Fisher at the helm.
The firing itself did not come as a surprise, but the timing was a bit interesting as it came when the Rams had a short week ahead before traveling to face the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.
Additionally, it was just announced a couple weeks ago that he signed a two-year extension to remain with the team.
While the news of the extension was leaked recently, the extension was reportedly agreed upon before the season. Fisher recently commented on the leaking of the news, criticizing the Rams organization for letting the news leak, via Cameron DaSilva of Fox Sports:
“It was never my place to announce the extension, so somehow it got out,” Fisher said. “Then that became an issue. None of it was handled appropriately, in my opinion. In this day and age, the successful teams in the National Football League are tight-knit. They work together and they stay quiet. They don’t leak things. And that was a frustration of mine.”
While signing an extension usually implies some job security, that did not end up being the case for Fisher as ultimately winning was the most important thing for Rams owner Stan Kroenke, COO Kevin Demoff and general manager Les Snead.
The Rams lost their first game in the post-Fisher era, falling to the Seahawks 24-3 under interim coach John Fassel.
A lot of big name head coaches have come up about who the Rams possibly could hire to replace Fisher, but no interviews will be conducted until the end of the season likely.
