It was the start of an exciting era for the Los Angeles Rams when they returned home to Southern California. However, what turned into an invigorating campaign quickly reversed into a nightmare debut 2016 NFL season. Among the lengthy list of things that did not pan out was their first overall draft pick, Jared Goff.
Despite the forgettable season, Goff is now making strides in head coach Sean McVay’s offense and showing flashes of leadership. With a new head coach, the second-year quarterback is already making progress according to Myles Simmons of Rams:
“It’s a way different offense. Personally, from my brief experience with it, I’ve had a quicker time learning it — easier time learning it,” Goff said on Monday. “I don’t know whether that’s scheme or the way it’s taught or what not, but I’ve enjoyed spending time with the coaches and picking it up pretty quickly.”
Leadership has also been an improved aspect of Goff’s game. Both the coaching staff and teammates have already spoken out on how being comfortable and being himself has helped him develop into a better leader heading into the 2017 season.
Goff averaged 54.6 percent completion while totaling five touchdowns and 1,089 yards in seven games played. The young signal caller has a long way to go before he convinces not only Los Angeles but the entire league he was worth the top pick in last year’s draft. However, the way he has been looking during the offseason, the Rams are optimistic the learning curve may not be as long as others think.
