The Los Angeles Rams made some big moves this offseason to help with the development of Jared Goff. The addition of head coach Sean McVay, Andrew Whitworth, and some young playmakers through the draft give reason to believe that the Rams are looking to avoid another disastrous offensive year like the one they had during the 2016-17 NFL season.
With that said, there is still plenty of work to do in the classroom as Goff and company continue to learn the new system. According to Myles Simmons of Rams, it is a task that coaches and players say Goff is more than capable of handling:
“I think a lot of that has to do with the guys around me,” Goff said. “I think we’ve done a good job offensively going from the install to on the field and being effective with it. I think that goes back to the coaches as well. Their ability to install and their ability to teach and coach us has been tremendous. It’s been a lot of fun learning with them and continuing to improve myself and the team as a whole.”
The difference has almost been night and day compared to what Goff endured last year trying to get accustomed to the playbook. One common theme regarding the players in camp has been the seamless transition into the new system thanks to McVay’s detail-oriented type of coaching.
Although he is still young, McVay was the play caller for the Washington Redskins, who ranked third in the league in total offense last year. If the Rams can at least somewhat mimic that type of production, then that would be a huge step forward for this offense.
