Los Angeles Rams tight end Gerald Everett is coming off an unfulfilled rookie campaign. However, he admits there was a bit of a learning curve upon entering the NFL.
As a result, this may have held him back from putting up the kind of numbers he is capable. According to Kristen Lago of the team’s official website, he is much more comfortable going into the 2018 NFL season:
“I don’t have to think as much,” he said. “Last year, I was spinning, to say the least. But now that I can finally relax and just compete, it feels pretty good.”
Everett added that he is confident in his role this season.
“Just understanding my role and what is going to be expected of me,” he said. “I’m not spinning as much as when I still had the college stuff in my mind.”
Head coach Sean Mcvay is known for utilizing two-tight end sets in his offense. As a result, Los Angeles selected the versatile Everett with the 44th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
The former South Alabama product showed plenty of promise early on after hauling in four catches for 134 yards in his first two career professional games. Unfortunately, his production tailed off as the season progressed as he would finish the year with just 16 receptions for 244 yards and two touchdowns.
There was some uncertainty as to what attributed to his sudden drop-off in production. However, it now appears that his lack of understanding of the offense is what ultimately led to his diminished role throughout the course of the season. Fortunately, he is having much better luck getting acclimated this time around.
As a result, the expectations are high for the second-year tight end. His size and athleticism make him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. That said, do not be surprised if this becomes a breakout year for Everett.
