The Los Angeles Rams coaching staff under head coach Sean McVay has undergone some changes already this season with Mike LaFleur coming on as offensive coordinator after parting ways with the New York Jets. Now, another promising young coach in Nick Caley is set to join the staff as well.
According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, Caley, the former New England Patriots tight ends coach, will be taking the same position on the Rams staff:
The Rams are hiring ex-Patriots TEs coach Nick Caley as their new tight ends coach, per sources. Caley interviewed for OC jobs with the Pats, Jets and Texans, and had inquiries for other jobs, but saw the Rams as the best fit.
Sean McVay adds a rising, young coach to his staff.

Caley was the longest-tenured assistant under Bill Belichick, having been with the Patriots since 2015 and holding the position of tight ends coach since 2017. Caley interviewed for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator position, but they chose to hire Bill O’Brien instead, and with his contract expiring, Caley has decided to move on and join Sean McVay’s staff with the Rams.
It is an intriguing hire for the Rams as Caley is viewed as one of the brighter, young coaches in the NFL. At just 37 years old, Caley will have the opportunity to learn and grow under the McVay tree and potentially take on more responsibility if needed in future years. The fact that he was already being considered for an offensive coordinator position shows the potential he can bring.
McVay is looking to bring in the brightest minds to help turn around what was an abysmal season from the Rams offense last year and Caley fits that mold. The Rams have a promising tight end already on the roster in Tyler Higbee and this move could help bring the best out of him as well.
Rob Gronkowski believes Rams should give Tyler Higbee more opportunities
Tyler Higbee is coming off another solid season in which he led the Rams in targets and set a new career-high with 72 receptions. And someone who believes Higbee could produce even more is retired tight end Rob Gronkowski.
In a recent interview, Gronkowski spoke highly of Higbee but said he needs to be more consistent. Gronkowski was unclear whether it was a matter of offensive system, but added that someone as talented as Higbee should get more opportunities.
