The Los Angeles Rams have now dropped two straight games following a 3-0 start to the 2019 NFL season and are now desperately trying to get back into the win column in Week 6.
The defense had been one of the strong points of this team to start the year while the offense struggled to find its footing. Unfortunately, it appears as though the two sides have now switched roles in recent weeks after the Rams came up short in a couple of high-scoring affairs in their last two games.
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ group has been uncharacteristically generous over the last two games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks. As a result, there is plenty of speculation regarding the state of the defense moving forward.
Safety Eric Weddle is happyw with the effort his teammates have put forth on that side of the ball and is not concerned with what people outside the organization have to say, via Stu Jackson of the team’s official website:
“It really doesn’t matter what the outside thinks,” Weddle said. “I’m not really concerned with that. We fought our tails off.”
Weddle added that there was nothing he could do about the circus grab by wide receiver Tyler Lockett from quarterback Russell Wilson in last Thursday night’s loss:
“You can play the coverage perfect, took him, covered him up, and he throws it up and makes a play,” Weddle said. “Those things happen. You just chalk it up as a great play by Russ and a great play by Tyler. I’m not going to lose sleep over a play like that. It’s an amazing play.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Weddle’s comments. The grab by Lockett was one of the few instances where all he could do was sit back and watch.
Although the defense has endured its fair share of struggles over the last two games, they have still managed to afford their offense some chances to potentially secure a win. Regardless, it is no secret that both groups have fallen short of expectations during that time and Los Angeles now finds its self in a bit of a hole heading into Week 6 as the third-place team in the NFC West Division.
Despite the recent losing skid, the Rams have been relatively optimistic about getting back on the right track and are still far from pressing the panic button. After all, the games they lost still could have gone either way had they been able to recover in time.
The onus is now on Phillips and head coach Sean McVay to take advantage of the extra time they have to put the Rams in a position to bounce back against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.
