The Los Angeles Rams have been fortunate to see some of the best running backs in NFL history suit up for their franchise, including legend Eric Dickerson.
Dickerson has remained involved with the Rams over the years and is still a wildly popular player amongst the fan base. Of course, Dickerson’s claim to fame is the NFL’s single-season rushing record he set during the 1984 season when he ran for 2,105 yards in just 16 games.
Dickerson’s name has come up in recent weeks as Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley is closing in on his record. Barkley has been the best running back in the league during the 2024 season and is 268 yards away from breaking Dickerson’s record with two games to play.
However, the Rams legend doesn’t believe Barkley will actually break his record, via Sam Farmer of L.A. Times:
“I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it. Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That’s the way I look at it. If he’s fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it’s a great record to have.”
As far as the player goes, Dickerson is a fan of Barkley though expressed his preference for bigger running backs:
“I like him. But I tend to like big backs. He’s not a big back like I was. He’s elusive, he’s tough, he runs hard, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. I think he’s a great player. I always felt like he’d never reach his potential when he was in New York. You could take Emmitt Smith and put him in Cleveland, and he’d have never been the Emmitt Smith we know now.”
It’s clear that Dickerson respects Barkley and his game, but it was refreshing to him speak so candidly about his record. With two games left to play, Barkley has a real shot to overtake Dickerson in the record books and it’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles give him that opportunity.
