The resurgence of the Los Angeles Rams has been perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2017 NFL season. After a disastrous opening season in Los Angeles, the Rams finally have a team that is exciting to watch.

Among the notable moves Los Angeles made in the offseason, the biggest was undoubtedly the hiring of new head coach Sean McVay. After guiding the Rams offense from worst to first, Cris Carter has already labeled McVay as an early-season favorite to win 2017 NFL Coach of the Year during an episode of FS1’s First Things First:

“The Rams are really good. Sean McVay right now is the coach of the year,” said Carter. “When you take a franchise quarterback in Jared Goff, that people are saying ‘he’s a bust,’  you turn around his career. Todd Gurley, who couldn’t run the football after having a phenomenal rookie season – and he’s back to being an elite player in the NFL. We would be really doing a disservice to the Rams if we didn’t talk about Sean McVay… What a tremendous job taking a chance and turning around a franchise.”

While it is a bit early for such a bold prediction, McVay has already made a strong case for the award. Many of the doubters — especially those in Los Angeles — were ready cast the Rams off as just another mediocre team in a large market.

However, they have proved to be a legitimate playoff contender so far through Week 4. If they can continue to progress, there is a strong chance of McVay becoming the youngest recipient of this award in NFL history.
