Los Angeles Rams rookie running back Cam Akers was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after his career day against the New England Patriots in Week 14.

It took a while for Akers to get going this season after the Rams drafted him in the second round out of Florida State, although it appears he has finally taken over every-down duties.

His game against the Patriots served as a coming-out party as he carried the ball 29 times for 171 yards, also adding a pair of receptions for 23 yards on Thursday night. The Rams cruised to a 24-3 victory, improving to 9-4 on the season as they look to win the NFC West for the third time in the last four seasons.

Overall in 11 games this season, Akers has rushed for 528 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry while also catching six passes for 72 yards and another touchdown.

His emergence has led to less playing time for both Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown, who have both been serviceable for the Rams this season. Having three quality running backs will be big for L.A. down the stretch as it will allow all of them to stay healthy and fresh with the postseason just around the corner.

Akers will have another chance to have a big day on the ground this Sunday with the Rams hosting the winless New York Jets. If the Rams are able to get out to a big lead early, then it could be a lot of Jared Goff handing off to Akers, Henderson and Brown.
