Rams News: Quarterbacks Brandon Allen and John Wolford Happy With Play Against Broncos

It is hard to find a weak spot on the Los Angeles Rams offense. With Todd Gurley manning the run game and Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp forming a formidable group of wide receivers, the Rams have both areas of attack covered.

Of course, there is no question that the Rams are also secure at quarterback. Jared Goff has become a star and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. However, even the best need a backup.

For now, it appears that Blake Bortles will assume the role of Goff’s main backup. The Rams are still fielding third and fourth-string quarterbacks Brandon Allen and John Wolford though.

Allen and Wolford saw significant time in the Rams first preseason victory against the Denver Broncos last week. According to Stu Jackson of TheRams.com, Allen was pleased with the flow of the offense:

“I thought overall, as an offense, we moved the ball pretty well up and down the field,” Allen said. “A lot of guys made some good plays out there.”

Allen had a strong game, completing 12 of his 19 attempts for 162 yards. He helped lead the offense on multiple drives but did not end up finishing with any touchdown passes.

The Rams sole touchdown came from Wolford’s four-yard pass to receiver Jalen Greene. Despite that, Wolford did not manage to connect on too many passes. He completed six of his 12 pass attempts for 64 yards.

Wolford seemed to ease into his role after he got his first completion:

“I felt great,” Wolford said in regards to how comfortable he felt Saturday night. “From the first drive, hit J.K. (RB John Kelly) in the flat to get things going, and then from there, just kind of settled in. Once you get the first (completion), you’re good.”

Head coach Sean McVay expressed his pleasure at both quarterbacks’ performance in their last game. With final roster cuts coming up soon, it appears that McVay will not have an easy decision.

Thus far, Allen has led the quarterback crop in most stats. He has totaled 311 yards on 61.5% completion rate and six yards per attempt, better than the rest of his contemporaries. Despite his great overall stats, he is the only backup quarterback yet to record a passing touchdown. Allen is also the only player to throw an interception and to be sacked.

The Rams will have one more preseason game to sort things out. The team faces the Houston Texans on Thursday evening in Houston.
