Around this time last offseason, there was plenty of doubt surrounding the Los Angeles Rams’ hiring of Sean McVay as the youngest head coach in NFL history. However, it was not long before the consensus hopped on McVay’s bandwagon and now every team seems to be looking for the next head coach that can provide the same spark.
Apparently, his appeal is not just limited to teams. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield reportedly rushed to sit next to McVay during a flight on Southwest Airlines:
Spotted on the way to Indy: OU QB Baker Mayfield in a middle seat right next to Rams coach Sean McVay on a SouthwestAir flight. McVay was seated first, Mayfield hustled to sit next to him. … There may be some QB talk going on.
It is not difficult to predict what the two may have been discussing. However, Rams fans are still jokingly on the defense to make sure there is no ploy to potentially replace quarterback Jared Goff. Fortunately, it is safe to assume Goff’s job is cemented following a stellar campaign.
That said, it is likely that Mayfield was using the opportunity to pick the brain of one of the brightest, young minds in the NFL. The former Heisman Trophy winner has been prepping for the 2018 NFL Draft in April.
While he is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft, there has been some speculation regarding his size and boisterous personality. Perhaps McVay was able to shine a light on how to approach potential suitors that will be looking for their next franchise quarterback.
