The Los Angeles Rams have been dominant throughout the first three weeks of the 2018 NFL season with many viewing them as the top team in the league right now. Unfortunately, they did not come out of Week 3 completely unscathed.
Both starting cornerbacks, Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, left Sunday’s game early. While Peters’ calf injury was relatively minor and he will be week-to-week, Talib was not as lucky and will miss significant time.
According to Lindsay Thiry of ESPN, Talib will undergo ankle surgery and the Rams have placed him on injured reserve:
The Los Angeles Rams placed cornerback Aqib Talib on injured reserve Wednesday.
Talib will undergo ankle surgery Thursday after he suffered a high-ankle sprain in a victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Being placed on injured reserve means Talib will miss at least eight weeks, though head coach Sean McVay was unable to put an exact timetable on his recovery so he could be out for longer. Regardless, this is a major loss for the team as a whole.
The Rams defense is the cornerstone of the team and Talib is a big part of that. They lead the NFL giving up only 12 points per game and rank in the top-10 in both passing yards and total yards allowed.
So far this season, Talib has totaled nine tackles, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble. With he and possibly Peters both being out, the pressure on the Rams backup secondary will be immense.
Sam Shields, Troy Hill, and Nickell Robey-Coleman will have the unfortunate task of trying to slow down the NFL’s top receiving duo in Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen when the Rams host the Minnesota Vikings Thursday night.
