One year after signing Allen Robinson to a three-year contract, the Los Angeles Rams have moved on from the former Chicago Bears wide receiver, sending him — along with a seventh-round pick, to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a seventh-round pick.
The deal gives the Rams about $7 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap, but mainly opens up even more space for the 2024 offseason, one in which the Rams appear to be building towards with all of their offseason moves.
Robinson did not have a particularly productive single season with the Rams. In 10 games, Robinson collected 33 receptions for 339 yards and three touchdowns. In terms of receiving yards per game, it was his worst season as a pro.
Now that Robinson is a member of the Steelers, he was able to reflect back on his time with the Rams, where he felt he was not used as well as he could have been, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com:
Of his time in L.A. last year, Robinson quipped: “If you’re a fork, you don’t want to be used as a spoon the majority of the time.”
Robinson missed the second half of the season due to an injury. He is also entering his age-30 season, his 10th in the NFL. It’s certainly fair to wonder if fans will ever see the same player that made the 2015 Pro Bowl and had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Bears in 2019 and 2020.
But, according to Robinson, he is far from finished with his productive playing days.
“I have a lot of football left in me,” Robinson said Monday. “I thought last year for the time that I was playing, in those 10 games, I felt very good about some of the things that I did. Unfortunately, I didn’t get maybe some of the opportunities that I may have wanted and things like that. But as far as how I felt as a football player from my route-running ability, being able to get active a little bit in the red zone and doing some things like that on third down and stuff like that, I felt very good about last year.”
If Robinson can be productive, it should greatly help a Steelers offense that ranked 24th in pass yards per game and 26th in points per game. He would likely serve as the team’s No. 3 receiving option behind Diontae Johnson and stand-out rookie George Pickens.
Regardless, the Rams can breathe easier knowing they have removed his salary from the books moving forward, and can begin planning for the 2024 season.
A’Shawn Robinson signs with Giants
The Rams added yet another loss to their growing list of 2023 offseason changes. Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants. Prior to the draft and continued free agency, it appears the Rams have a depth issue at the defensive tackle position.
