The Los Angeles Rams have named quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Robert Woods, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, left tackle Andrew Whitworth, defensive lineman Aaron Donald, defensive lineman Michael Brockers, safety John Johnson III, and punter Johnny Hekker as the team captains for the 2020 season.
It comes as no surprise to see Goff, Whitworth, Donald, and Hekker maintain their status as team captains from last season since each player has long established themselves as foundational pieces for this franchise. They will now be tasked with ushering in a new era at SoFi Stadium in the 2020 NFL season.
Brockers will be wearing the “C” on his chest once again following a one-year hiatus as an official team captain. It has been quite a year for him after he nearly departed to the Baltimore Ravens before making his return and it is evident that his place in the locker never changed.
There is no question that the new faces in Kupp, Woods and Johnson are more than deserving of enjoying the upgraded threads on their jerseys. They will be replacing the void left by cornerback Aqib Talib and safety Eric Weddle after both opted for retirement this offseason.
Both Woods and Kupp are once again looking to provide Los Angeles with plenty of bang for their buck before receiving a lucrative payday in the near future. The receiver tandem will be expected to serve as a stabilizing factor on offense for Goff in the wake of Brandon Cooks’ departure.
Meanwhile, the revamped secondary is back to full strength with Johnson now back in the mix alongside Jalen Ramsey, Taylor Rapp and Troy Hill. The former third-round pick is looking to get back to his 2018 form when he was snubbed for a Pro Bowl after finishing with 119 tackles, 4 interceptions and a forced fumble.
It is safe to say that being named a team captain this season certainly carries plenty of weight considering the unprecedented circumstances of preparing amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and a time of social unease due to racial injustice.
