The Los Angeles Rams have been fortunate to see some of the greatest NFL players come through their organization.
Aaron Donald is a living legend that will surely make the Hall of Fame someday, though the Rams have other iconic figures to brag about. People like Deacon Jones, Jack Youngblood and Merlin Olson established themselves as superstars during their time in the league and each make for worthy representatives of the franchise.
One person that gets lost in the history of the organization is Eddie Meador, who was one of the best defensive backs during his era. Meador became an instant contributor for Los Angeles and made quite the career for himself.
News came out that Meador had passed away at the age of 86 and the Rams released a statement about his passing, via TheRams.com:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of an NFL great, Eddie Meador, who was a standout leader for our organization and the Los Angeles community throughout his entire 12-year career,” the team said in a statement. “He was an instinctive and fearless competitor who captained some of the greatest defenses in NFL history. Eddie’s ability to galvanize teammates made him a heartbeat of the Rams and his humility made him approachable to everyone. The Meador family and friends are at the core of our thoughts, and his legacy will live on forever.”
Meador was originally a seventh-round pick in the 1959 NFL Draft and started 11 games for the Rams as a rookie where recorded three interceptions. The defensive back would go on to play the entirety of his career in Los Angeles where he was named a six-time Pro Bowler and a two-time First-Team All-Pro.
He is currently the Rams franchise leader in interceptions with 46 and tied for the record for most interceptions returned for touchdowns with five. Meador started 160 out of 163 games, a testament to his ability and durability.
While it’s sad to hear a Los Angeles great like Meador passing away, his life should be celebrated and fans will surely appreciate all he gave to the organization.
Rams announce eight team captains for 2023 season
Ahead of the 2023 season, the Rams announced their eight team captains. They are Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Tyler Higbee, Ben Skowronek, Rob Havenstein, Aaron Donald, Jordan Fuller and Ernest Jones.
