The Los Angeles Rams have had some extremely unfortunate injury luck to begin the season, and it looks like that is continuing.
Rams defensive tackle Larrell Murchison was placed on injured reserve after training camp and missed the first four games of the season with a forearm injury. It seemed that he was on track to return earlier this week as the Rams opened up his 21-day practice window, signaling that an activation from IR was near.
Unfortunately though, Murchison is now back on IR after breaking his foot in his first practice back.
“It’ll be a semantic thing and then we’ll end up putting him back on IR,” head coach Sean McVay said. “Poor guy broke his foot the first day back from practice. What we’ll do will enable us to not necessarily have to burn him for the year. It’ll be semantics that you guys will see in terms of the transaction, so a bummed for him. He’s worked really hard, but he’ll continue to do it.”
With Murchison back on the shelf, the Rams brought back a familiar face in Jonah Williams, who may play this weekend against the Green Bay Packers.
“There’s a possibility that Jonah could be up and ready to go,” McVay said. “He has a familiarity with what we’ve done, so getting him out here today at practice and then we’ll see exactly what that looks like. I’ll kind of be able to look at that with the coaches after today.”
It’s hard not to feel for Murchison, who has been a valuable depth piece for the Rams’ defensive line since coming over in 2022.
After suffering a broken foot, it’s reasonable to think that Murchison will miss the rest of the season although it’s possible he returns late in the year if the Rams are in the playoff mix.
Darious Williams returning for Rams in Week 5
The Rams injury news this week hasn’t all been bad though as top cornerback Darious Williams was activated from injured reserve and is expected to return in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.
Williams missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury but will be a welcomed return for a Rams secondary that has struggled to begin the year.
The Rams have a bye in Week 6, and more reinforcements could be on the way when they return to play the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.
