The Los Angeles Rams made a splash with the acquisition of Dante Fowler Jr.at the trade deadline. However, there was speculation regarding whether or not they would choose to go with a cornerback instead.
The Rams have had some trouble defending the pass thus far in the 2018 NFL season. Head coach Sean McVay felt the team need to fortify its pass rush over the secondary, via Cameron DaSilva of The Rams Wire
“We didn’t. We were mainly looking into just that pass rusher kind of that we had talked about, where we were able to acquire Dante (Fowler Jr.),” McVay said during his press conference. “I know Les (Snead) and his staff do a great job of exploring all avenues if we feel like we can get better. But, in terms of something that we had identified as a staff and as an organization that we wanted to potentially go address, a corner wasn’t one of those spots.”
McVay’s comments should hardly come as any surprise. There was plenty of hype surrounding Los Angeles prior to the 2018 campaign for their acquisition of Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. They also managed to lock up Nickell Robey-Coleman for the near future while adding some depth in Sam Shields.
However, the Rams had gotten lackluster production out of their edge rushers this season. Although they boasted a formidable trio of defensive lineman in Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh, and Michael Brockers, they still had trouble getting a consistent pass rush going.
As a result, it appears the front office felt they needed to address that void before anything. Meanwhile, the secondary has struggled mightily against the more competent offenses they have faced this season. Fortunately, there is a silver lining to their struggles with Aqib Talib expected to return in Week 13.
