After an eventful start to the offseason, the Los Angeles Rams have officially assembled their new coaching staff under head coach Sean McVay for the 2021 NFL season.
McVay is certainly no stranger to finding replacements for the notable voids in his staff since taking over back in 2017. However, this offseason experienced more turnover than usual with the departure of seven assistant coaches.
The Rams were forced to find new coordinators in all phases of the game after Brandon Staley left to take over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. He has since been replaced by former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
Passing game coordinator Shane Waldron was hired as the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator while special teams coordinator John Bonamengo was brought back as a senior coaching assistant after being replaced by Joe DeCamillis. Tight ends coach Wes Phillips will be taking over Waldron’s duties as passing game coordinator.
Run game coordinator/offensive line coach Aaron Kromer also parted ways with the team this offseason. Kevin Carberry has since been hired as the new offensive line coach and defensive line coach Eric Henderson will double as run game coordinator.
Among the other familiar faces that will be taking on expanded roles this offseason include Thomas Brown (assistant head coach/running backs coach), Ejiro Evero (secondary coach/pass game coordinator), Chris Shula (linebackers coach), and Zak Kromer (offensive assistant). Meanwhile, some of the other new additions to the staff are Marcus Dixon (assistant DL coach), Nick Jones (offensive assistant), Chris O’Hara (offensive assistant), Dwayne Stukes (assistant special teams coach).
For Brown, this represents a significant promotion to assistant head coach, which is a reward for the great work he has done with the team’s running backs since McVay was hired.
The Rams have become accustomed to the challenges that come with putting together a new coaching staff and bringing them up to speed on the team’s expectations. There will undoubtedly be a spotlight on whether or not this group can help them take that next step to a Super Bowl.
