Rams Designate Running Back Cam Akers To Return From IR

The Los Angeles Rams announced that running back Cam Akers has officially been designated to return from injured reserve. That means he can now begin practicing with the team and has 21 days to be activated if he wants to play this season.

This was not expected to be possible as Akers suffered a torn Achilles just before the start of training camp, which usually commands around a year of recovery, especially for a position like running back.

Akers attacked his recovery in hopes of being able to return this season though, and it was reported by Sean McVay in recent weeks that it was a possibility he could return for the playoffs, which now appears to be a reality for the Rams.

Getting Akers back would be huge for this Rams team who have had an inconsistent run game all season.

Darrell Henderson has carried the lead-back role for most of the season, although that has changed in recent weeks with the emergence of Sony Michel.

Michel gives the Rams a physical option at running back, something Akers also provides if healthy. Here is the video the Rams released featuring Eric Dickerson to announce Akers’ potential return:

If Akers is able to play this season, it’s unlikely he would take over lead-back duties. Having a committee of Akers, Michel and Henderson would ensure they all stay healthy and fresh for the stretch run though, which could be important for a Super Bowl run.

Regardless of what contributions Akers does or doesn’t make this season though, it is great to see that he is healthy as the young running back still has a very bright future in L.A.
