The Los Angeles Rams are preparing for a big offseason in which they’ll have a replenished stock of draft picks and cap space to improve their roster. It took only one retooling year — one in which the Rams traded several stars only to still make the postseason — to get back to a situation to be aggressive, and no one is more excited than Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff.
All the Rams top decision makers struggled with the reality that the 2023 campaign had to be a retooling one. L.A. was running slim on cap space and draft capital, and knew the only way to get back to being competitive was to take a year off from aggressive spending. They built a young defense around superstar Aaron Donald, drafted well and got a resurgent year from Matthew Stafford to ease the transition.
Now, with that season in the rear view mirror, Demoff is excited to get back to doing what the Rams do. He first spoke about the frustration that came with being so low on cap space and draft assets, via Demoff on ESPN LA:
“I put this in the letter (to Season Ticket Members last year), the problem was, we’d always been so aggressive, we just didn’t have the draft picks or the salary cap space to win those battles,” Rams Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff told Travis Rodgers and D’Marco Farr on Rams radio affiliate ESPN LA 710 AM at Rams Revealed Live. “When you go into a Christian McCaffrey trade, people can outbid you. That was never the case with us before. Now with hopefully 11 picks once we get these compensatory picks, and a first-rounder, four picks in the Top 100 and about $45-50 million in salary cap space, we can go be the Rams, we can be aggressive.”
All signs point to a fun offseason in Los Angeles, as the Rams have all the tools necessary to add firepower to a playoff team that already features stars at multiple positions. L.A.’s biggest areas of need currently are with the defensive line, the secondary and continued improvements to the offensive line.
Rams prioritizing backup quarterback
Rams general manager Les Snead is going into the offseason with one relatively surprising area of focus, and that is the backup quarterback position. Snead does not want to repeat the events of 2023, when Stafford had to miss a game with injury and Brett Rypien could not generate any offense in a bad loss to the Green Bay Packers.
