Since moving to Southern California, the Los Angeles Rams have done well to attract new fans and build their own fanbase after previously playing in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Rams’ return to Los Angeles was initially met with indifference from fans in California who had already hitched their wagons to teams like the San Francisco 49ers, the then-Oakland Raiders and even the then-San Diego Chargers. However, the team’s popularity soared has soared under head coach Sean McVay, who has led the organization to five playoff berths in seven years including two Super Bowl appearances and one championship.

While Los Angeles has been busy stacking up wins, the NFL has done well to grow its presence overseas as they’ve held games in countries like Mexico, the United Kingdom and Germany. The 2024 season features five international games, including the league’s first foray into South America when the Green Bay Packers take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

However, it looks like the Rams might get a chance to be part of the NFL’s first game in Australia, via Tom Morris of Nine.com:

“9News can reveal the Melbourne Cricket Club is exploring the possibility of hosting a game in the 2025/26 season.

While discussions are in their early stages, it’s understood the LA Rams have been slated as the ‘home’ franchise for what would be an historic occasion in Australia’s sports capital.

The Rams and Philadelphia Eagles have developed a presence on these shores, but will not face-off in the 2025/26 season because of the way the NFL schedule works.

The Rams are the early preferred hosts due the proximity of LA to Melbourne. A direct flight operates between the two cities.”

L.A. is a logical choice to play a game in Australia due to geographical factors and it would be exciting to see them play overseas if the opportunity arises. Currently, international cricket takes place on the grounds in the months of December and January so a game would likely be held earlier in the season.

It’s unclear if other states in Australia would bid for a chance to host an NFL game, but the situations is worth monitoring.

Last week, the NFL released the full schedule for the 2024 season and head coach Sean McVay showed off his impeccable memory by recalling plays and moments from previous games against their upcoming opponents.
