Now that the Los Angeles Rams have officially parted ways with former head coach Jeff Fisher after nearly six seasons, the quest for a new head coach is now in the works.
Despite their 4-9 record, the situation surrounding Los Angeles bodes well for possible suitors. So much so, their plan will be to go big name hunting this offseason for some of the most notable coaches in football. According to Sam Farmer of Los Angeles Times, those names could potentially include Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh:
“Those close to Gruden have indicated he would listen to a Rams pitch, however, and that he might be interested in a return to coaching after seven years as color analyst for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.” He knows quarterbacks, turned around a dead-in-the-water Oakland Raiders franchise and won a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay at the end of the 2002 season (by beating his former Raiders team).”
Meanwhile, the consensus on Harbaugh leaving Michigan has not been as encouraging. However, that did not stop Rams legend Eric Dickerson from giving his blessing on the decision to pursue the charismatic coach during his show on AM 570:
“People are talking about Jim Harbaugh, that would be a good fit. He develops quarterbacks,” Dickerson said. “He had Alex Smith in San Francisco. He had an offensive line he had to rebuild. It’s almost the same situation you have here.”
Although the possibility of actually acquiring these coaches is a bit of a stretch at this time, it would be hard-pressed to find a more lucrative offer elsewhere. This is an extremely talented, young squad that has received praise from a number of opponents throughout this nightmarish 2016-17 NFL season.
Additionally, Los Angeles is the second-largest market in the nation and they have an owner with pockets deeper than the Mariana Trench in Stan Kroenke. Combine all of that and the Rams are one of the more attractive coaching vacancies in recent history.
