The NFL announced that Los Angeles Rams reserve center Aaron Neary has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s policy and program on substances of abuse.
Neary was originally signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2016 out of Eastern Washington. After spending time in the Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles organizations, the Rams claimed him off waivers in September on 2017.
He spent the rest of the 2017 season on the Rams’ practice squad before being added to the active roster to start one game at the end of the season when the Rams were resting all of their starters, including center John Sullivan.
The Rams waived Neary in Aug. 2018 and he was claimed by the Cleveland Browns, although they waived him a month later and the Rams brought him back. After spending the entire 2018 season on the practice squad once again, Neary signed a reserve/future contract with the Rams this past February.
This suspension is obviously a tough break for Neary as he looms to establish himself as an NFL player, perhaps getting his first real opportunity this season. He will still have the chance to show what he can do during Training Camp and the preseason though before beginning his suspension.
