The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with offensive lineman Austin Blythe.
While the Rams have lost some key players on the defensive side of the ball in Cory Littleton, Michael Brockers and Nickell Robey-Coleman, it seems they made bringing Blythe back a priority after their offensive line struggled for most of the 2019 season.
Blythe originally was a seventh-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2016 out of Iowa. The Rams claimed him off waivers in 2017, and he has only missed one game in his three seasons with the team. He started the 2019 season as the team’s right guard but moved over to center after Brian Allen suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 10 and became a stabilizing factor upfront for the Rams.
While Allen is expected back from injury in 2020, it will be interesting to see if the Rams decide to leave Blythe at center considering that is where he had the most success last season.
As it currently stands, the Rams have little cap space to work with to fill out the rest of their roster. Now that they have locked up Blythe, they will likely shift their focus to doing the same with outside linebacker Dante Fowler Jr.
