After a 3-1 start to the season, head coach Jeff Fisher and the Los Angeles Rams find themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak. In the return to Los Angeles, things haven’t transitioned ideally, including the play of No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff.
The top selection in the 2016 draft has yet to play this season for the Rams, as quarterback Case Keenum has taken the helm. While the offense has shown steady progressions each week, the Week 7 loss to the New York Giants seems to have reopened the debate.
The Rams have a Week 8 bye, meaning Fisher has two weeks to prepare for their next contest against the Carolina Panthers.
Upon beginning the season as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, Goff is beginning to show signs of a possible stint as the starter. During their practice on Wednesday, it was revealed Goff has begun taking first team reps.
While this could be a media stint from Fisher, it at least shows signs that Goff could see playing time. Should the quarterback be inserted into a starting role, the offense scheme will not change, via Myles Simmons of TheRams.com:
“We would not change a thing,” Fisher said. “We wouldn’t scale anything back, we wouldn’t change a thing. He’s got that good of a feel for what we’re doing.”
If the team were to drop out of playoff contention, Goff should certainly be placed on the field. While Fisher has been methodical in keeping Goff under wrap, if the situation were to escalate he should see playing time.
While Fisher himself is reportedly on the hot seat, some changes should be made moving forward.
With a 3-4 record, the Rams are currently more than three games behind the Seattle Seahawks. Their saving grace could be their strong showing against the NFC West, as divisional victories would insert them back into the playoff conversation.
